The Strategy and Tactics of Graphic Design

Course is curently not scheduled. Sign up to be notified when it is.

WHO is this for?

If you ever have to create a flyer, a poster, a brochure, an ad, a yard sign, or anything visual — and you’re not sure what to do or even how to start — this course is a must. No matter your current artistic ability, you will learn to create effective presentations. And this class is where it starts.

WHAT happens in class?

Most people think good design is a result of skill. And while skill is always a good thing to have, understanding and implementing strategy is much more important. Knowing how to start your design is the ONLY way for your design to achieve its goal.

  • We’ll start by understanding the brain, then consider the intentions of design, the goals, and other strategies. Then we’ll look at examples and you’ll decide what works and why. You’ll be surprised by how much you already know and how much more you can learn about creating good design.
  • Then we’ll create some projects. Using pencil and paper, crayons, scissors, and glue. If this sounds familiar, you’ll learn why that’s true. And why it has to be.
  • Then we’ll talk about some tactics, like type and fonts and white space and balance and color. And you’ll discover how easy it is to get them right and how frequently people make a mess out of things by doing only what they like instead of doing what works.

ELECTRONIC TOOLS

If you have a laptop or tablet with a graphics or layout program, you may bring it and we’ll give you some pointers. If you don’t or choose not to, your instructor will have one for demonstration purposes.
